Job description:   Founded in 1989, NRG is an international leader in Independent Power Production. NRG develops, operates, owns and acquires a variety of energy-related operations worldwide including independent power production and cogeneration facilities, district heating and cooling production, thermal energy production, transmission and resource recovery facilities. NRG has nearly 3,000 employees in 5 countries, primarily in the United States but also in Australia and Germany. The company recently moved its headquarters from Minneapolis to Princeton, New Jersey.

Fulfill a central leadership, coordinating, oversight and support role in NRG’s regional organization with a focus on environmental strategy and compliance, working with members of the regional Environmental Business team; develop and facilitate a full understanding of local, state and federal environmental requirements that do or may affect NRG’s business and coordinate compliance efforts as well as proactive approaches and submissions to balance economic and sustainability objectives; facilitate the continued development, support and implementation of NRG's environmental policies and procedures; maintain a full understanding of all local, state and federal grant, incentive, loan or other funding programs that may be applicable to NRG’s Environmental Business activities and develop initiatives to access such programs; participate as an environmental expert on teams evaluating corporate asset acquisition, divestiture and capital enhancement decisions.

Reports To: Vice President, Environmental & New Business


Position Responsibilities:

· Coordinate and develop corporate strategy and positions on key environmental issues, especially those of national or regional significance (e.g., Clear Skies, CAIR, CAMR and CO2), including identifying and quantifying corporate impacts and exposures, all as part of multidisciplinary team.
· Support, coordinate and, as needed, project manage complex agency and government negotiations to successful resolution, including strategy input and ensuring consistency with overall corporate approaches and direction (both within the Environmental Business team and across regulatory affairs, legal and other internal stakeholder groups).
· Manage NRG’s overall relationships and participation with key external stakeholder groups, including industry associations (e.g., Class of ’85, EPRI, EEI, UWAG, CHWMEG, CEED, IPPNY, EEANY etc.).
· Active process owner of NRG’s Environmental Business process for Sarbanes-Oxley – including managing periodic testing, revisions and compliance.
· Structure, implement and maintain a system to: (a) monitor and preempt/respond to federal legislative and regulatory developments with potential environmental impacts on NRG’s business; and (b) surface as early as possible regional and state legislative and regulatory initiatives with potential environmental impacts on NRG’s business and form/work with appropriate teams to disseminate relevant information and formalize and coordinate NRG’s position/response.
· Primary interface with accounting in connection with identifying, classifying and/or communicating actual or potential environmental liabilities, asset retirement or impairment obligations, etc.
· Project manage efforts as needed to acquire permits associated with constructing or modifying power plants, landfills, and/or high voltage transmission lines.
· Conduct due diligence investigations and related activities associated with acquiring or divesting energy facilities and evaluating financial risks associated with regulatory uncertainties.
· Provide oversight and be a primary corporate contact point for emergency response.
· Establish goals for remediating contaminated properties, implementing efforts designed to do so, and completing remedial efforts on time and within budget.
· Develop, update and implement corporate environmental policies and procedures.
· Coordinate all internal and external reporting requirements with respect to Environmental Business matters (including SEC and other regulatory filings, Quarterly earnings announcements, Board Reports and Annual Reports).
· Coordinate, and organize as necessary, NRG’s ongoing environmental audits, TRI and HAZWOPPER training, as well as provide material inputs to, and functional oversight of, NRG’s environmental tracking tools (KPI, EPAS, NEMS and EIMS).
· Participate and play a coordinating role in NRG’s periodic budgeting process, with particular emphasis on the amount and timing of capital expenditures required to meet Environmental Business objectives and the revenue and operating expense implications of various retrofit or other environmental control options.
· Prepare or oversee the preparation of environmental impact statements or assessments as needed.
· Use computer programs (database, word processing, spreadsheet, decision-making, flow-charting, AutoCAD, presentation, and project management, etc.) to help solve and/or communicate complex problems.

· Ability to take initiative and responsibility for team projects and outcomes.
· Commercial experience and judgment, coupled with a through knowledge of environmental issues, and an ability to communicate and educate various internal and external stakeholders, discerning levels of background and detail required for optimal effect.
· Knowledge of all major environmental laws (CAA, CWA, RCRA, TSCA, EPCRA, and CERCLA, etc.) and their current legisltative status, including all relevant state and regional initiatives (existing and proposed e.g., OTC, RGGI etc.).
· Knowledge of power plant operations and the environmental ramifications of firing a wide variety of fuels, including, but not limited to coal, fuel oil, and natural gas.
· Ability to support staff and manage projects dispersed across a large geographical area.
· Ability to perform as part of a multi-disciplinary team and achieve optimal outcomes in a matrixed organization.
· Ability to think proactively and creatively about threats to, and opportunities for, NRG’s business.

Required Qualifications and Experience:
· Engineering and/or environmental sciences degree.
· At least 10 years’ corporate experience devising, implementing and managing environmental initiatives, compliance programs and budgets.
· Direct experience in, and knowledge of, the power generation industry.
· Track-record of hands-on approach and achievement in developing and maintaining environmental business initiatives in a dynamic environment.

Salary: $110,000 to $140,000
